Charlottetårnet
In the first phase of their plans for Charlottehaven (or Charlotte Garden) – a 178-rental-apartment development on Strandboulevarden in Østerbro, Copenhagen – Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects exhibited great deftness in their treatment of both light and shadow, and texture and detail.
Beautifully resilient to high hotel traffic
So, it was natural that these interplays should continue into the project’s second phase: 37 furnished hotel apartments known as Charlottetårnet (or Charlotte Tower).
A perfect example of these two interplays is seen in the hotel’s light-yet-warm bathrooms, which are characterised by creamy-hued floor-to-ceiling terrazzo surfaces punctuated by d line sanitary pieces in PVD black. PVD was considered a perfect finish for the pieces destined for Charlottetårnet – where rooms are repeatedly turned over to welcome new guests – because of its resistance to the harsh, abrasive chemicals required to optimise bathroom hygiene.
Indeed, Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects considered it to be so effective that, having originally specified a toilet brush, toilet roll holder and towel rails in this dark, resilient expression, they returned to order d line 16L Lever handles in PVD black to match. The levers have been integrated into a smart system by VinCard known as ‘Essense’, so that hotel guests can access their rooms via a digital access key on their smartphone or watch.
Dark finishes such as this are more traditionally used in partnership with deep wall colours or rich, muted woods such as smoked oak. But as the bathrooms at Charlottetårnet show, when set within a soft, light palette, they become sharp, elegant accents.
